Mason Jones is targeting global supremacy, with the Welsh phenom convinced he can take his all-action style right to the very top.
On July 25, at Cage Warriors 175, ‘The Dragon’ set Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester alight, emerging victorious in a fight-for-the-ages against Italian star Michael Pagani.
Mason Jones has developed an Italian fanbase
On a night MMA enthusiasts will remember for a long time to come, the pair of fearsome fighters exchanged brutal punches en route to carving out their own little piece of history in the yellow gloves.
Of course, the violence on display came as no surprise to the Italian media, who’ve previously seen Jones display his skills in Rome, and thus, flew over to England to watch him take on their countryman.
Following the fight, Jones opened up about expanding his international fanbase.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he said: “To be fair, the Italians are one of the best crowds I’ve ever fought in front of. Rome was a crazy experience. It felt like I was a home fighter, fighting abroad, which is amazing to experience—much love to the Italians.
“Obviously, Brits always welcome me as their own, but to go abroad and fight in Rome when I did and have a home crowd reception is insane. It was a crazy fight tonight. The atmosphere was electric. It’s my third time fighting here and the first in front of a crowd. It was a nice way to rubberstamp my Cage Warriors career.”
Mason Jones loved showcasing his talent in California
Having proven himself as an incredibly entertaining competitor, Jones is never short of major opportunities, flying over to San Diego last year for a Cage Warriors card he’ll treasure forever.
He reminisced: “I’ve spent a lot of time in California. I’ve trained in Sacramento for eighteen months of my career so far. I have much love for the Californians. San Diego is probably my favourite place on the planet.
“The atmosphere, the surf— I do love it. I’d love to live there one day. To fight there was insane. I love to travel and fight—there’s nothing I like to do more. So, for me, to be able to travel, fight and put people away is what I love more than anything.”
Mason Jones is determined to scale the MMA mountain
With the 29-year-old undoubtedly capable of reaching incredible heights, he’s determined to do everything in his power to become the best lightweight on the planet.
He asserted: “I’m gonna be the number one in the world. I know people will look at my performances and be like, ‘He’s not quite there’. They always say the same. I think I won the Mike Davis fight. He’s on a four-fight win streak.
“I messed up the Ľudovít Klein fight in London, I went in there trying to be a superstar, and he’s on a seven-fight unbeaten streak. These are all top contenders. I threw around David Onama, I like him and he’s on a tear. I’m going to be the best in the world, I’m gonna keep on working and improving, and you’ll see it.”
